Discover Primary Science and Maths

Caroline Coleman, Project Manager & Xwerx, Web developer

Discover Primary Science & Maths, together with its website, offers excellent and valuable resources for teachers and students in Irish primary schools. The programme helps large numbers of children to understand that science and maths are also about fun, discovery and adventure, and are fundamentally relevant to their everyday lives. Whole-school, hands-on training sessions via worksheets, games and experiments are provided for all teachers who wish to participate in the initiative. A range of resources are then supplied to participating classes. These include:  - a pack of over 30 easy-to-follow science activities; - helpful hints for teachers; - explanations of the science behind each activity, and how the module relates to the SESE (social, environmental and scientific education) curriculum. Schools that take part and meet certain criteria are recognised with an Award of Science and Maths Excellence. Since the outset, the web has played a fundamental role in delivering the Discover Primary Science & Maths programme in both the Irish and English languages.

Jury Evaluation:

Discover Primary Science & Maths is an interesting website for teaching and learning science and mathematics for kids between 4-12 years in an easy manner. It helps kids understand natural science and play games to learn mathematics. In addition, it shows how science is part of our daily life and that it is integrated in everyday activities.

This website is rich in multimedia content explaining science and math in a simple way. It is a valuable resource for children to help them understand that science and maths are about fun, discovery and adventure. This website is for now targeting teachers, parents and children in Ireland, but it could be used everywhere in the world.

Discover Primary Science & Maths is an engaging website and has a participatory approach as teachers, parents and kids can upload their photos, video, experiments and essays. It has a newsletter and launches periodic awards for schools to promote the organization of events on science and math for kids. Additionally, it links Discovery Science Centres in Ireland and shows their activities. It is actively used and a valuable tool for both students and teachers in primary schools in Ireland.

The WSA team thinks that this is a very good site that promotes science & maths for kids and facilitates the teachers’ tasks by providing illustrations experiments and tools to explain space and science.
